Energy Conservation
Patterson Park Public Charter School's new Middle School building was designed with multiple Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) in place. Climatic Design Inc. performed a whole-building energy model simulation, a comprehensive energy analysis, and an assessment of the building systems and configuration for the project. Multiple Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) were suggested. With minor changes and the execution of the recommended ECMs, the building is18.6% more efficient than the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 Baseline. The following recommended ECMs were instituted:
1- HVAC Efficiency
2- Control interior lighting of all spaces with windows
3- Install high performance windows with maximum 0.29 assemblies U-Value
4- Reduce internal lighting power density by a minimum of 20% from the ASHRAE Standard
5- Install automatic light controls in all activity areas
6- Increase overall U-value of the roof assembly to R-45
7- Increase overall U-value of the exterior walls to R-15.6

Green Team Energy Audit
The Green Team was able to look at our school and month to month what we use in energy. They then conducted an entire school audit in spring 2012. Using this audit as a baseline, they then made up a challenge for our classrooms. Which classroom could save the most energy? We had one class win a pizza party and one win a donut party. Starting next week, we will conduct another challenge for our staff and students.
Retrofitting PPPCS
In the summer of 2012, using grant money, we were able to change all of our flourescent lights into more effecient ballasts and lights. Not only will this save our school money - it will also save a lot of energy.
Power Down Days
On April 9th, 2013 and May 14, 2013, our school will start our monthly power down days. For one half of the day, all classrooms will be expected to be electricity free - no LCD projectors, no computers, no lights. This should be able to show us how we can save energy. We are going to work with the BEC to analyze our energy consumption!
